When 24-year-old Evelyn Keppler goes missing without a trace, her desperate parents task the introvert ex-cop and P.I. to find their daughter. Seeler's investigations lead him to the coast of the Adriatic Sea, where he discovers the missing woman in a mysterious self-help group. And Evelyn is in unstable psychological conditions, as the spiritual organisation's approach to finding trauma is through hypnosis. It is near impossible for the subconscious to separate real memory from those created to deal with traumatic events. Hartwig Seeler experiences this first hand when he undergoes hypnosis with Amanda, the same healer that treated Evelyn Keppler. Seeler is still trying to recover from his wife's accidental death and the unresolved issues surrounding the event. But more worrying are the circumstances that have driven Evelyn into the arms of this spiritual group. Seeler starts to doubt the sincerity of his employers: There are grave reasons for the young woman to try to leave behind her old life.
