Gunnar Barbarotti receives an anonymous letter containing a murder threat concerning a certain Anna Palme. Although unknown to him, he attempts to warn the woman, but is unable to prevent the bloody deed. When the inspector receives a second written murder threat, he is suspended from duty due to his personal involvement. Has someone a score to settle with him? Could it be motorbike rocker Roffe, who once punched him in acourtroom? While Barbarotti continues to investigate on his own, gossip reporter Sundblad tries to force him to cooperate with the tabloids, by using his knowledge of the ominous letters to pressure him. But where did he get this information from? Is there a mole within the police force? After the mysterious serial killer announces two further crimes in the written form, Barbarotti has the letters examined by a linguist, who creates a strange profile: The killer uses words and expressions that are only common to Southern Sweden. He is apparently also left-handed, despite his attempts at writing with his right hand. In his next letter, he threatens to kill Gunnar, who is deeply shaken. Does the killer really intend to kill him?
