Everything is just fine in Fischbach until the day a newborn baby is abandoned in the confessional of the village church. Sophie Strohmayer, the vicarage housekeeper immediately embosoms the child, while priest Jens Steffensen, on the advice of his friend at the Episcopal chair, is determined to hand the child over to the youth welfare office or the police. But not as long as Sophie has something to say about it! She opposes the idea and prefers to find the desperate mother and give her the baby back. The media have latched onto the affair and publish reports on the "vicarage baby" and speculation begins, whether the irresponsible father possibly lives smack dab in the village. While Sophie is trying to investigate even the smallest of clues, Jens becomes downright enchanted by the baby. He learns how to change its nappies, lovingly feeds it, takes it for trips in a pram and detects unlived parental feelings. In search of the mother, Sophie finally finds a clue in an elite golfing hotel...
